In celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) on October 23, 2023, we hosted a dynamic career fair at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center. The event brought together over 40 forward-thinking companies, 140 eager job seekers, and a dedicated team of 51 volunteers.
Our career fair aimed to bridge the gap between job seekers with disabilities and prospective employers. The diverse array of participating companies provided unique employment opportunities. Volunteer HR professionals played a crucial role, offering support through mock interviews and resume reviews, empowering job seekers to showcase their talents effectively.
This collaborative effort created an inclusive space where connections were forged, opportunities explored, and skills honed. We extend our gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and companies for making this event a resounding success. These seminars were intended to identify key barriers to employment of people with disabilities, evaluate and select disability service providers that can remove barriers and meet their company’s hiring goals, and understand transition-to-work mindsets and expectations to hire and retain talent with disabilities.
ABOUT THE EVENT
This 2-part Education Series hosted by Dallas Mayors Committee, EmployAbility will empower employers to evaluate and select disability service providers that can remove barriers to employment and meet their company’s hiring goals. This on-site event, hosted by U & I – Dallas and My Possibilities – Plano will include Identifying key barriers to employment of people with disabilities, an interactive Q & A session focused on moving beyond awareness and etiquette to building real disability inclusion, and an on-site tour of each facility. You will hear success stories of how companies overcame hiring objections to show that employment of people with disabilities can be successful even in complex situations.

Linda Carter Batiste is a Principal Consultant/Legislative Specialist of the Job Accommodation Network (JAN). JAN is the leading source of free, expert, and confidential guidance on workplace accommodations and disability employment issues. Serving customers across the United States and around the world for more than 35 years, JAN provides free one-on-one practical guidance and technical assistance on job accommodation solutions,Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and related legislation, and self-employment and entrepreneurship options for people with disabilities.Dan Rollings is the South Central Program Director and Alexandra Walch is Client Services Program Manager at Canine Companions for Independence. Canine Companions is leading the service dog industry so their clients and their dogs can live with greater independence. They provide service dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities and facility dogs to professionals working in healthcare, criminal justice and educational settings. Since their founding in 1975, their dogs and all follow-up services are provided at no cost to their clients.

Tools, Techniques, and Technologies for Creating Inclusive Workplaces

The Interactive Process & Behavioral Health Issues in the Workplace

(60 minutes, 1 CEU from HRCI only)Learning to effectively manage employee mental health is a business imperative. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports one in five people are dealing with a mental health challenge. Other research reveals that people with depression have a 2.5 times higher risk of on-the-job injury. To insure a productive workforce, employers must learn to reduce stigma surrounding mental health conditions as well as to develop effective practices for supporting employees experiencing a mental health challenges.
This session will address the importance of creating inclusive workplaces free of the stigma that often accompanies disabilities such as mental health conditions and will examine best emerging practices for supporting employees with mental health challenges throughout their employee life cycle.
Registration is required. All participants must be issued credentials to be on Southwest Airlines campus.

SAP: In May of 2013, SAP announced is objective to have 1% of its workforce represented by people in the autism spectrum. This session will address the history, structure, benefits, success stories and roadmap of the SAP Autism at Work Program. Jose will share how SAP is making their vision of making the world run better and improve people’s lives a reality.
nonPareil: nonPareil Institute provides practical, long-term solutions for adults living with autism. The presentation will give you a brief overview of autism, challenges adults face with regards to post-secondary education & employment, and the nonPareil model for addressing these challenges.

This education event will focus on the revised Section 503 Regulations which aim to positively effect employment statistics for people with disabilities by requiring employers who are federal contractors or subcontractors to set affirmative action goals and to report progress toward meeting those goals. The new rules strengthen the enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act and put into place new employer requirements around recruiting, hiring, and accommodating individuals with disabilities. Our speakers – Tarak "TK" Shah from the OFCCP and Arrissa Meyer, Associate with Haynes Boone – will discuss this topic and provide meaningful updates for employers.
This session is worth 2 hours of SPHR/PHR CEU Credits.
